Holstein Austria and the rise to one of the most esteemed populations in Europe

Admittedly, the 48,000 herdbook cows makeup one of the small populations in Europe. Just as small, but with considerable international orientation, is the breeding program. Nonetheless, Austria’s Holsteins are on the rise. Their population is growing, the export of breeding animals is increasing, their production is noteworthy despite the high proportion of grassland only regions and small farm operations, and in terms of conformation they are now at the same level as the top nations on the continent. As such, it is time to take a look at Austria’s Holsteins for our herdbook series. And naturally with the nimble breeding associations, particularly the umbrella organization Holstein Austria.
