It is the typical diseases like hypocalcemia (milk fever), ketosis, mastitis and metritis that hang like threatening storm clouds over the post-calving phase. And, in addition to the clinically obvious, it is the subclinical sicknesses that influence the production potential. Of course, there are possibilities to treat a cow for acute disease directly after calving, but the secret here lies more in prophylaxis. And: almost all of these diseases can be prevented or minimized with the right feeding management.
