Using Genetic Selection to Reduce Methane Emissions

In April 2023, Canada became the first country to add the trait Methane Efficiency to its genetic evaluations for Holsteins. In many other countries, developmental work is now well advanced and we can expect to see selection for Methane Efficiency become widespread over the next few years. Research suggests that selection for Methane Efficiency should result in a 20-30% reduction in methane emissions per cow by 2050.
