KHW Regiment Apple-Red EX-96: Twice World Champion and fountainhead of the Apple dynasty.
The Apple dynasty is playing a dominant role in red & white breeding and has given a whole new meaning to the term ‘elite conformation’. With her sale price of one million dollars, her dazzling show career, and her sensational descendants, Apple-Red appears in the news frequently. Now she is doing this once again, sensationally: Apple is the first (Red) Holstein world-wide with more than 100 EX daughters!

To be clear, Apple has taken over the title as the cow with the most EX daughters in breed history, now with 83 scored EX in the US and 16 scored EX in Canada. One cow is on both lists so that leaves Apple with 98 EX daughters in North America. Her youngest daughters are now 4 or 5-year-olds but surely there will be two more to add to this impressive list! KHW Regiment Apple-Red commenced her colourful career at the World Dairy Expo in 2006 when she captured the attention of the cattle breeding world by winning the Jr.2 Holstein class…a red cow winning in a world of black and whites! That was also the year when her maternal brother KHW Kite Advent-Red announced himself to the red world by dominating the heifer classes of the Red & White show, and just two years later provided the Grand Champion of the Expo Red & White show with Cherrie-Kreek Beulah-Red.
RED IMPACT
The brother-sister duo of Apple and Advent are out of the great brood cow Kamps-Hollow Altitude-RC, an EX-95 Durham who traces through a 93 Prelude and 94 Jubilant to D-R-A August EX-96. Altitude-RC won the Red Impact competition in 2009, a feat that has since been achieved by two of her daughters, KHW Regiment Apple-Red and KHW Goldwyn Aiko-RC, as well as three of her granddaughters, MS Delicious Apple-Red EX-94, KHW Super Aderyn-RC and KHW-I Aika Baxter-RC EX-91. Altitude had a total of 26 EX daughters in the US, and in addition to her Kite son Advent, her Jordan-Red son Jotan-Red was very successful in Europe. The Apple family’s impact on red breeding is unrivaled! On the top side of her pedigree, Apple is sired by the Rubens son Carrousel Regiment-Red. Rubens, who was Premier Sire at the World Dairy Expo Red & White Show on 7 occasions, also sired the 2x World Champion Red Cow Lavender Ruby Redrose. Rubens had three impactful sons: Regiment-Red, sire of the 2x World Champion Apple-Red, Valleyriver Ruben Redman, who sired the 2x World Champion Blondin Redman Seisme-Red, and Dudoc Bacculum-Red, whose son Aggravation Lawn Boy-P-Red is a cornerstone sire for polled and red breeding.
MILLION $ COW
In the early ‘90s, D-R-A August EX-96 was an icon of the barn at Clover-Mist at Manitowoc in eastern Wisconsin. She stood in the end box stall and produced three 94-point daughters sired by Mark, Vanguard and Jubilant. At the Clover-Mist dispersal sale in November 1998, Richard Kamps purchased the Jubilant, Clover-Mist Augy Star EX-94, along with her young Prelude daughter Alisha. Alisha developed into an EX-93 cow and produced the Durham daughter Kamps-Hollow Altitude who sold as a young heifer to the three college friends Ryan Kamps, Mark Haag and Ryan Weigel (KHW). Apple was born in May 2004, and sold as a fresh 2-year-old to Deaver/Nabholz/Erbsen/Davis. After bursting onto the international scene at the 2006 World Dairy Expo, Apple developed celebrity status and went on to sell at auction for 1 million dollars to the Apple Partners syndicate in 2008. Her show career included Reserve Grand of the Red Show at the Canadian Royal 2009, Grand at the World Dairy Expo 2011 and Reserve Grand 2013. In 2010 and again in 2014, Apple was World Champion Red Holstein.
SONS
Along with producing 98 EX daughters, Apple sent a number of sons to AI with the most successful being Apples Absolute-Red, sired by Talent, and Mr Apples Armani-RC, by Goldwyn. Absolute daughters include Meadow Green Abso Fanny-Red EX-96, Grand Champion red cow at the Royal 2016, 2017 and 2019, as well as at the World Dairy Expo 2017. Other Absolute daughters to win at Expo include Highcroft Absolute Lily-Red EX-97, Grand Champion 2019, and Antia Absolute Joline-Red EX-97, Grand Champion 2021. In between those victories the 2018 Grand Champion was Oakfield A Shampagne-Red EX-94, sired by Apple’s Goldwyn son Armani-RC. Absolute also passed along his impressive type to his son Luck-E Awesome-Red.
CLONES
With Apple being such a high-value cow, the decision was made to clone her, and indeed her group of clones are arguably the most successful the industry has seen. Four of the 26 EX daughters of Altitude are clones of Apple, scored 94, 93 and 2 x 90. The 93-point cow, KHW Regiment Apple 3-Red-ETN was Grand Champion at the World Dairy Expo in 2013, the year the original Apple was Reserve. She is owned by Westcoast Holsteins and went on to score EX-94 in Canada. Her daughter Westcoast Defiant Addison-Red EX-95 was HM Grand at the World Dairy Expo 2018. Another clone, KHW Regiment Apple C-Red-ETN, scored VG-89 in Canada and is the dam of the type sensation Dymentholm Mr Apples Avalanche-RC (<McCutchen), who has a powerful influence on high type lists for both males and females. In 2012, Francisco Rodrigeuz from Colombia purchased the Apple clone KHW Regiment Apple A1-Red-ETN VG-87. She is the dam of Colganados D Avianca-Red EX-96, the Destry daughter at Oakfield Corners in New York, as well as the Redburst daughter Colganados Apple Magia-Roja-Red EX-95 in Colombia, the highest scored red cow ever in South America.
WORLD CHAMPION
The cross of Talent on Apple not only produced the great type bull Absolute but also two 94-point cows, MS Candy Apple-Red and MS Delicious Apple-Red. Candy Apple was owned by Borba & Borba of California and was Reserve Grand of the red show at the Royal 2013. Delicious Apple was owned by Mike Deaver of Wisconsin and produced the Doorman son Mr D Apple Diamondback-RC, a popular high type sire. Apple’s highest scored daughter MS Apple Snapple-Red EX-96 was purchased as a calf by John Erbsen, and produced the O’Kaliber daughter Erbacres Snapple Shakira EX-97, who has now twice been World Champion for Jacobs/Ty-D/Theraulaz/Attaboy/Antilimarck of Canada after winning the national shows of the US and Canada in 2021 and 2023. Grand Champion of the red show at the World Dairy Expo and the Royal in 2023 was Premium Apple Crisp Lilly-Red EX-94, owned by Jim Butler. Her sire Siemers Oct Apple Crisp-RC is a High Octane out of Siemers Mogul Apple-Star EX-91, who was from an EX Shottle daughter of Apple. Another superstar Apple granddaughter is Farnear TBR Aria Adler-RC EX-96 (<McCutchen). Out of an EX-92 Destry from Apple, Adler is dam of the popular high type red bull Farnear Altitude-Red (<Arvis-RC). Apples impact on the breed is profound.

EX APPLES IN EUROPE
In North America, there are now 98 EX daughters of Apple-Red. But this does not tell the whole story. Embryo exports to Europe have resulted in – as far as the HI editors are aware – three EX daughters. Which causes the total number of EX daughters of Apple to surpass the milestone of 100!
Petton LB Anna-RC EX-93, an Artist-Apple, was born in France and became HM All Britain 2021for Henry, Simpson & Timlin in Northern Ireland. Avala-Vray EX-90, a Redburst-Apple, was also born in France and during Nohl’s Excellence Sale 2018 was sold to Kastens Holsteins in Germany.
